Affiliate Corner: What Advice Do You Have for Someone New to the Space When Working With the Association Market?

AFFILIATE CORNER IS A dedicated space to recognize and celebrate the contributions of our affiliate members – professionals, partners, and supporters who play a vital role in advancing our shared mission. Affiliate members bring diverse perspectives, valuable expertise, and essential collaboration that strengthen our community.
TSAE provides countless opportunities to get connected and learn about the association world whether it’s attending the newbies programming at the New Ideas Annual Conference, attending Learn@Lunches or webinars, or just asking for advice on the community forum. When I was just getting started, I was lucky to have a seasoned affiliate who educated me about the industry and introduced me to other members at TSAE events. That made all the difference. So don’t hesitate to reach out and connect with a longtime member, many of us are happy to pay it forward. I’ll gladly volunteer myself!

When working with association clients, always approach challenges with creativity and flexibility. If you’re unable to accommodate their preferred dates or pattern, proactively offer alternate options that could still meet their goals. Don’t rely solely on email—pick up the phone and talk it through. A personal conversation goes a long way. Strong relationships and open communication can make all the difference in finding the right solution.

TSAE is a welcoming community, and I highly recommend it to everyone in this industry. Partnerships are critical to our success, so attend in-person events and network! Follow up with clients and colleagues and talk about ways to support one another. Share what makes your destination or organization unique so as to be a helpful resource. Be aware of what challenges associations are facing in order to better engage with association professionals.
